The difference a little rain makes!

I got to the ramp very early and went on out to put out the decoys. I got them out and picked up my clients Bryan and Jamie. They were ready to do some hunting. We got set up and sat down and while we were waiting for legal shooting time Jamie noticed that I had some Wood Duck decoys and asked me if I ever saw many. I said yes, but you never know what will come in. He said he always wanted a drake to mount but had never seen any out in west Texas. We had a lone Mallard drake come in on my side of the spread and I hate to say it but I missed.

Well the next group of ducks to come in was you guessed it - Wood Ducks! Jamie shot his drake and unfortunately Bryan missed his. We had several more pairs of ducks come in and we missed most of them except for a Widgeon hen. We got to talking about fishing and wrapped up the hunting around 9:15.

We put up the guns and got out the rods. Our first stop yielded us 9 fat Sand Bass. The next stop got us around 2 Sandies and I had a nice Hybrid break me off near the boat. The third stop yielded another 5 White Bass and 1 Bybrid that was 16". By now it was around 12:30 and I was getting a little nervous. The fourth stop was our hot spot for the day. In the next 2 hours we finished out their limit of 50 White Bass and we got picky and only kept fish thst were over 12". I would estimate that we easily caught over 200 fish and they were caught on Bass Pro Shops XPS Tungsten spoons and the Lead Babies Irish Specialin the Pee Wee model. The fish were in 21 to 28 feet of water and were thick! The bite was light but aggressive and the fish only wanted the slab raised an inch or two and then held motionless. Jamie and Bryan had brought ultralight rods and reels and had a great time catching the Sandies on such light tackle! We ended our trip around 2:15.

The water has come up at least a foot and the surface temperature came up anywhere from 7 to 15 degrees. The run-off water was where the water was warmest and the main lake was slightly stained ftom the rains. I think the fishing will stay good for at least another 2 weeks and the huting should reamin good through the end of the season.

Not a bad report for the last one of 2006!

Happy New Year to all!
