Jim Bausman had contacted me awhile back to fish Lake Grapevine while he was in town for a conference and staying at the Gaylord Texan Resort. With all the recent rains the water was very off color.
We began the day throwing brightly colored crank baits and spinner baits for Largemouth Bass. We got no takers at all, so we decided to try for the lakes plentiful White Bass. We soon found out they were tough to come by as well. I moved us all over the lake without much success. As I was moving around the lake trying to fish, I did notice some bank fishermen doing well in the shallows. This made me think that the White Bass were spawning on the wind blown points and could be caught on slabs or small swim baits around that type of structure..
I did not want to intrude on the bank fishermen at that location so I found another point and we started off using Lead Babies Slabs. These baits produced some fish but the action was a little slow. I then tied on some of Alluring Lures Swim Babies. I used a ? ounce jig head with a 2” Mullet colored body, and that was the ticket!
We caught and released around 30 White Bass in a little less than an hour. Jim had to get back and get registered but he had a great deal of fun. The water is in the low 60’s and the fishing is tough but the fish can be caught.
E-mail me if I can be of any use or help to you in anyway.
